The Past and The Future

When Meredith was little, I could give her a small pack of gummy bears and she would entertain herself by playing with them and making up stories about them. I just saw these adorable twig chairs thanks to whip-up's list of links; I can't imagine how much fun Mere would have making these! (As it turns out, she just told me she did make twig chairs, although not quite as sturdy as these are.)

I'm really starting to dread my foot surgery. I just spoke with my cousin who told me that orthopedic surgeries are some of the most painful type. Reading this article didn't exactly ease my concerns either. I am going to have the surgery on a Friday, and then I have to be off my foot for at least the following work week, a total of ten days. I'm hoping I can channel some of my daughter's ability to entertain herself, but I feel I'm out of practice. I know I have reading, knitting, the internet, and dvds, which should be plenty of entertainment, but I don't know if I can do it for that long without going crazy. Isn't it funny how one always thinks, "if I only had the time. . . ." and then when we do have the time, we complain about it? Or is that just me?

  2. Anticipating surgery stinks. Recovery seems slow until it's over then you may say 'that wasn't so bad.' Having had a few orthopedic surgeries, I think recovering one's brain from the anesthesia is the hardest part. The pain isn't so bad as it decreases each day or so - a sign that you are healing. It is always nice to know you are on the way to better. You will be on the way to better soon. As for using the time, the main thing will be letting your body do it's healing thing. It is hard to make the time useful for much else. Do what you can and let go. May you sail through the surgery and heal quickly.

  3. No, it's not just you! My son, James, was unemployed this summer, and he was miserable. Unlike my daughter, Isabel, also unemployed but good at self-entertainment (she took up knitting!) Isabel, being a second child, was often told to "go and play" when I was practising the violin with James or helping him with his homework.
As for your surgery, try to focus on how wonderful you will feel when you can get around again. And maybe have a special knitting project to work on while you're laid up--something easy that you've been looking forward to making.

  4. Oh, dear. Perhaps it won't be as bad as you fear it may and the outcome will provide you with a pain free foot.

Maybe we can do a knit along during your recovery. This way, we'd be keeping you company while you knit and alleviating boredom.

  5. You have all my sympathy for your upcoming surgery. I like to think that the anticipation (dread?) is worse than the actual event -- although I've never had surgery so I have no idea what it's really like.

My mom has had a lot of orthopedic surgery, though, and she's always been happy with the results.

  6. What terrible timing for you, Rose. But it sounds like it may lead to improved mobility for you and that will be good in the long run. No matter how much 'stuff' you have to keep you amused there's no ignoring the fact that you can't move around the way you want. You have so many varied interests...and seem to be well-prepared.
