January Blahs

How has your January been? I've been adjusting to my new dietary guidelines and while some days are good, I really haven't been my normal, positive self. It's a bit of a challenge trying to make dinner after working all day, especially when so many of my go-to meals aren't appropriate anymore. I am using the MyPlate app to track my calories and exercise, but since we've had so much rain, I haven't been walking as much as I should, and some days it all seems just too much work. But as I really don't have a choice, I start over again the next day. I know I'll get better at managing it all and soon enough it will be spring and I'll have more opportunities to get outside.

Steve and I went to the opening of the main library for the city of Norfolk last weekend, and it was quite a lovely experience. The old building was razed about two years ago, in part to make room for the light rail, and in part because it was terribly outdated. The new one is a beautiful blend of high tech with some old architectural details, and it's full of light.

Not sure if I shared the details of Steve's Christmas hats or not, so here they are. This one is made from Green Mountain Spinnery Alpaca Elegance, and the pattern, Ancient Mariner Watch Cap.

The one he wore on our trip to Baltimore is the Koolhaas pattern, by Jared Flood, and it's super dense and warm.

Also can't remember if I mentioned it, but my youngest has moved in with us for a few months and that means her cat, Fern, is with us as well. Although she and Gracie don't really get along well, this past weekend both of them declared a truce in order to take a nap with me. Either that, or they weren't aware they were sharing the same space.
And just for fun, here's my sweet Grace, napping on the couch. I love her little face so much!

  1. Changing your diet can really be a challenge, can't it. I discovered I have a dairy allergy about a year ago. I had no idea how many things contain dairy and its by products. How lovely that you get to walk on the beach! I used to live in VA and miss the warmer winters and proximity to the ocean. My Wisconsin winters are much different...and it's the dairy state. LOL

  2. All you can do is try your best to eat right and exercise as often as you can. Even a little change will have great results. How fun to have your daughter under your roof for a few months.

  3. I SO understand what you are going through. I'm still coming to terms with my jaw issues -- and it's been 15 months since diagnosis! We've had a ton of days where the high temperature was below zero. I'm trying to do zumba in my basement. Hang in there!

  4. Bleah. I hear you on the whole walking thing. I am resigned to using my Dreadmill when there is snow on the ground--which is ALL THE TIME NOW in NEO--and I absolutely abhor it. My exercise is nothing more than punishment to me, and nothing changes that. Not music, not attempting to read or use my computer (so hard with all the jouncing), nothing helps me feel positive about it. No wonder it is called "working" out. Ugh.

    AND I AM RETIRED! LOL.

Why not let us know what your specific restrictions are, and crowdsource some menu ideas/recipes? You never know what we might be able to help with!

    Love the kitty pix!
